Key Stage 3 covers Years 7 and 8, and Key Stage 4 is Years 9 to 11. This means that students will choose their options to start at the beginning of Year 9.
Our core purpose at KS3 is to deliver an engaging and challenging curriculum through excellent teaching and learning. During Year 7 and 8, we aim to:
• give students a broad insight into the subjects that they may wish to continue to study in more depth from Year 9;
• develop students into resilient learners capable of tackling the demands of study at GCSE; and
• develop students who are confident and responsible members of the school and wider community.
By the end of Year 8, students have largely decided the subjects that they wish to study at greater depth and we give them a choice of four options in addition to the core subjects. The option choices include a mix of academic subjects and the arts and we believe that having four option choices allows students to continue to study a broad and balanced curriculum. During Year 9, students have the opportunity to try out these option subjects and, if they find that a subject does not suit them, we work with them to find an alternative.
Our aim, during Year 9, is to make students ‘GCSE ready’ by equipping them with the core skills and attributes they will need in order to help them make progress and meet challenging target grades.
